The Psychology of Colour in Home Decor: A Guide to Choosing the Right Colours for Your Space

Imagine stepping into a bedroom that instantly makes you feel calm and relaxed; or a home office that makes you feel inspired. Colours can have a profound effect on our psychology, influencing our moods, behaviours, and perceptions of the space around us. In fact, if you’ve been considering a home renovation, you’d be surprised at how much a simple change of colour may change your mind! And harnessing the power of these colours in our decor can help create a more harmonious and emotionally engaging environment at home!

Psychology of Colour 101

Before implementing the psychology of colour in our home decor, we must first understand the basics behind it. Each colour tends to have its own distinct emotional spectrum associated with it. Here are a few of the most common:

Blue is most often associated with calmness and tranquillity. It offers a soothing sense of security, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms where we want to promote relaxation.

Yellow is a vibrant colour associated with vibrant feelings, like happiness and positivity. Creating a warm environment, it is an excellent choice for kitchens and entertaining spaces.

Green is the colour of nature and growth, encouraging an atmosphere of balance and harmony. It is a lovely choice for living rooms and nurseries!

Red is a passionate and stimulating colour and has been shown to raise energy levels and promote lively conversation. This makes it well-suited for dining rooms and other rooms in your home where you want to encourage interaction.

Purple has a long-standing association with luxury and creativity, which makes it great for home offices or rooms where you want to add a touch of sophistication.

Orange combines the energy of red with the warmth of yellow, creating excitement and enthusiasm. These can be particularly useful emotions for home gyms or playrooms!

Neutrals—like white, grey, and beige—invoke feelings of openness and flexibility. They are like a blank canvas to the mind, which is why so many real estate professionals will recommend them if you want to make a good first impression when selling your home.

Setting the Mood with Colour

When choosing your home decor, it is essential to keep in mind the atmosphere you want to create in each space. For rooms where you want to feel calm and relaxed, like bedrooms and reading nooks, choose soft blues, greens, and muted neutrals. For spaces meant for creativity and productivity, like home offices and craft rooms, add a splash of vibrant red, orange, or yellow. Warm tones, like earthy browns and golden yellows, are great for living rooms where you want things to feel cozy and intimate.

Cautions to Keep in Mind

While the prospect of creating emotional influence with colour can be exciting, it is important to keep harmony in mind. True, incorporating a variety of colours into your home decor can create a visually dynamic environment. But it can also be overstimulating if not balanced well.

Before donning your painting clothes and a brush, experiment with colour combinations to find ones that complement each other. Refrain from using too much of any intense colours, and aim for a conservative approach. For every one or two dominant colours (like the 2023 Pantone Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta), complement them with softer, neutral tones.

It is also important to note that while the psychology of colour does offer general insights into how different hues can influence emotions, there is a level of subjectivity to it. Personal experiences, memories, and cultural backgrounds can also shape how we perceive and react to colours. There is no hard and fast rule to colour psychology, only observation.

Using the psychology of colour in home decor can be a powerful tool in elevating your living spaces from just rooms to emotionally engaging sanctuaries. By understanding the emotional impact of colours and how they work together, you can create an environment that resonates with your personality and supports your desired moods. Remember: the beauty of colour lies not only in aesthetics but in the emotional connections they forge within us—making our homes truly special places where memories are created and cherished.

Incorporate Viva Magenta Into Your Home

Pantone releases a Colour of the Year in January, and in 2023 the colour is Viva Magenta. This bold hue represents the challenges and joy in our ever-changing world. Finding ways to incorporate this colour into your home might seem challenging, but here are a few simple ideas to try for yourself!

Accent Wall or Feature Wall

If you want to add Viva Magenta to a room without it feeling like an overpowering colour, consider painting one accent wall. Another great option to break up the colour is to select a vibrant decorative wallpaper with magenta accents. Think about what other complementary colours you will decorate the room with—lighter shades of blues, pinks and purples can subdue and highlight the colour.

Furniture and Accessories

Furniture in the colour Viva Magenta would make a lovely accent piece in a room, whether it be a chair, ottoman or sofa. Choose contemporary furniture with curves and lines that draw the eye in without making the colour feel overwhelming. If you aren’t ready to commit to such a bold colour, a slipcover over existing furniture would be an easy, cost-effective way to add it. Use smaller Magenta accessories to display, like coffee table books or a vase in soft pink or purple for extra interest.

Artwork and Decorations

If the ideas above are still too ambitious for you, there is always artwork and small decorations for a pop of colour. Look for abstract art featuring complimentary colours or vibrant Magenta. Vintage prints come in rich colour palettes, or search for vintage muted tones like soft pastels to keep in the Magenta theme. Decorations such as pink candle holders or small photo frames—little touches can bring together the whole design.

Create Contrasting Color Combinations

Viva Magenta pairs well with various colours but, when used minimally, can create a strong contrast within its own colour family. Colours like shades of yellow or even sunny yellow can create a unique stand-out effect. Opt for lavenders, pastel pinks or deep purples for a subtle yet rich combination of colours.

Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta, is a bold statement colour but has a lot of versatility. Try incorporating it into your home to create a modern, classy look. Whether you paint the walls or find a great accent piece, this colour will energize any room.

Design Trends We Can Leave in 2022

Trends come and go throughout the years. Here are the trends that are on their way out in 2023.

Hard-Edge Furniture

Curved furniture is still dominating the interior design space. Hard-edge, clean-line furniture is making its way out. However, instead of completely removing these hard-edge space-saving furniture pieces, dress them up with curved accents, such as round cushions, round coffee tables and textured throw blankets. Pairing furniture with these accents can create balance, depth of space, and coziness.

Rounded Fuzzy Textured Statement Pieces

Fuzzy textured chairs and couches were all the rage in 2022, and the end is in sight for these pieces. While not only being hard to clean, their uniqueness feels dated and drab for the new year—skip this trend in 2023. If you have one or two of these fuzzy chairs or couches, don’t eliminate them, as there is still a trend for round pieces next year. Dress them up with flat fabric throws and cushions.

Monochromatic Minimalism

Monochromatic decor has no personality and a cold quality that needs to be left behind this year. Its over-simple and sparse furniture placement leave little to be desired. Opt for more colours, patterns and boldness in 2023 to bring out your personality in each room.

All-White Kitchens

It is sad to see them go. All-white kitchens are losing popularity this coming year. Although they remain a classic colour palette and an excellent base, to begin with. Homeowners are leaning towards a more kitschy kitchen in the new year, with bold accent colours on the walls and the cabinets. Think of fun tile backsplashes, curtains and plants!

Industrial Hardware

Matte-black plumbing and hardware that coincides with the monochromatic theme are far too casual for the new year. Now that people are dressing and going out again, so are their homes following suit. Polished metals such as chrome and brass are making a comeback and will take center stage in 2023.

Plain Door Frames and Moldings

In 2023 we are looking at vintage homes with interesting architectural elements, such as unique moulding, wider doors and archways. Modern box frame doors have been in for several years, but a shift is coming to create more dynamic living spaces starting with the door frames. Mouldings and cases also avoid contemporary hard edges and opt for scalloped or pentagon shapes.

Before you go and renovate your entire home to fit these trends, you may want to consider just dressing up the existing pieces or fixtures you have–even a fresh coat of paint can make a massive change to a room.

2022 Design trends to Follow

Interior design trends in 2022 are broad and diverse. Some timeless classics hold steadfast while emerging colour palettes, textures and materials flip-flop. Given the varied array of trends, not only will you be able to make your home unique to reflect you but also in style for years to come. Spending more time inside and our needs are ever-changing, our style and purpose must also be altered at home. Here is a mish-mash list of top 2022 home decor and interior design trends I am sure you will love!

Curvy accents and furniture

The end of modernism of sharp corners, sharp edges and angular symmetry seems to be ebbing away. Be on the lookout for circular mirrors, curvy tables and soft round couches—accent furniture with gorgeous rounded cushions.

Natural Materials

Natural Materials have been a continuing trend over the last few years with a focus on natural materials, textures and shapes. Think of quartz or marble surfaces, whether countertops or accent tables, natural woods, rattan or bamboo furniture. Homeowners are finding quality materials and pieces that will last and keep on-trend for years to come.

Home Jungle

There’s something magical about being surrounded by greenery and the satisfaction of caring for something that grows. Bringing the outdoors in is a great way to boost creativity, productivity and concentration as plants boost a person’s mood, purify the air and can prove to be therapeutic. So, scatter some plants around your house and don’t forget that hanging plants can be a piece of art and that unique planters and macrame hangers add a touch of elegance to any home. For those of us that don’t have time to take care of plants, fake plants add just as much ambience to the space!

Playful Textures

There is no denying that adding texture to a home is visually pleasing–layers of textures create volume and elevate coziness levels. However, try not to limit texture to textiles such as blankets, cushions and rugs. To generate more stimulation, consider adding pieces of furniture with inlays, intricate designs or unique handles. Lastly, rich or flowy natural fibre window coverings help style any space and set the mood.

Warm Colours

Clients are continually embracing natural tones and going away from white, greys and blues. Embracing interesting colour palettes of purples, chocolates and hunter green, which add an individual flare to any home. Or, choose colours that are more subdued with creams, taupes and beige while keeping the colours warm and cozy.

Sustainable Materials

Emerging generations are becoming more conscious of the environment, and home sustainability has changed with it. There is a more significant push to focus on recycling, renewable energy and ethically sourced home decor. To curb waste, choosing natural and organic fibres, materials, paints and dyes over synthetic ones is a must.

Vintage and antique pieces are all the rage! Take joy in making something old new again, whether that be with a fresh coat of paint or stain. Or, simply embrace as is to keep the original lived-in vibe.

New builds emphasize energy efficiency, featuring solar panels, heat pumps and EV chargers. If that sounds a little extreme, adding a low-energy furnace and water heater can significantly impact the environment for the greater good. A word of advice would be to check out the Government of Canada website to see what kind of Environmental retrofit benefits your home can qualify for!

Dual Purpose Spaces

Over the past few years, our homes have had to adjust to our ever-growing needs to be at home for longer periods of time and rooms have transformed into offices, classrooms, gyms and entertainment spaces. Rooms that were once just spare rooms are now an office with a Murphy bed, creating form and function all in one. Organizational containers, shelves, and multi-purpose furniture are the best way to create a comfortable dual-purpose space.

My living room has also become a gym, meditation room, and yoga mats and dumbbells have taken over—a tall decorative basket resolved this issue!

Outside Living

Choose an excellent patio set, barbeque and a few warm throw blankets and bring the party outside. Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities and food. Use the 2022 trends mentioned in this blog as a guide to style your outdoor deck or patio with natural but bold colours, organic fibres, and textures. They should all play a role in your design.

4 Tips For Budgeting a Home Renovation

Renovations, especially when preparing your home for sale, can make or break how quickly your property will stay on the market. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of choosing new finishes for home projects or be blindsided by unforeseen hiccups that can dramatically increase costs. Deciding on how much to spend on home improvement projects can be tricky—lucky for you, I have compiled some tips that will help you stay on track and minimize any unwanted surprises!

Set Your Spending Limit

According to Zillow, you should spend no more for each room than the percentage of what that room values in the overall house value. For example, the kitchen generally makes up to 15% of the overall property value. If your home is worth $200,000, you will want to cap remodelling expenses at $30,000.

Another good guideline is not spending more than 10-15% of your home’s value on a single room. Any more than that will not proportionally add to the value of the home. HomeAdvisor states the average cost to renovate a kitchen at $4,000 – $60,000, a bathroom at $2,500 – $25,000, and a basement at $11,000 – $30,000. Keep in mind that older homes will often cost more to renovate if wiring and plumbing aren’t up to code.

You will also need to determine how you are financing your project! Your renovation budget will need to fit within the limit of available funds, whether it is by cash, loan or credit.

Prepare for Hidden Costs

This tip is possibly the most important of them all, so listen closely. Once you have concluded how much you can afford to spend, set aside 10-20% of your available funds for any unexpected expenses that may arise. You might have heard of the phrase, “things happen,” and it definitely applies to home renovations. Things go wrong or cost more than what was initially predicted, and by setting aside these funds at the beginning, you know that you will still have enough cash to cover no matter what happens.

Prioritize & Make a Plan

So long as there is no expertise required, consider doing some tasks yourself to help reduce labour costs. Things like pulling up tile, removing old cabinets, ordering your own fixtures and finishes, shopping for used or refurbished items, and doing your own painting are all easy to do yourself.

You’ve used all these tips and added value to your home, so now what? You don’t want to risk pricing too high in risk of not selling. Contact your favourite local REALTOR® for a free home evaluation!

Top Home Decor Design Trends for 2021

Home design trends are constantly changing, but with the state of the world over the past year and a half, we can identify some common themes emerging. We see many rethinking the functionality of their homes and the concentration on building a safe, calm, and joyful space to centre us in throughout the various recent and tumultuous events. Here are some key trends that you can easily incorporate into your living space or make it more appealing to potential buyers if you are planning to sell your home!

Say Goodbye to Exclusively Formal Rooms

Have a formal dining room or living room you only use once every 6 months? The focus is now on livable luxury and versatility in design. This means rethinking our less-used spaces and embracing furniture concepts that play double duty—we’ve seen many formal dining rooms turn into home offices and school rooms. However, this is also your sign to turn that space into something totally your own that sparks joy. Always wanted a craft room? Maybe a library to live out your Beauty & the Beast dreams? Go for it!

Embrace Natural Materials

This is the return of nature and earthy inspiration to really become one with that zen mindset. Pieces like cream coloured ceramics, marble coffee tables, wicker baskets, rattan headboards, and unfinished wooden furniture help create a comforting and organic look and feel. Earthy tones and warm, soothing colour palettes like wine reds, sagey greens, and golden yellows have also increased popularity.

Become a Plant Parent

Speaking of natural, 2020 was back to basics. Hands up if it was your mission to successfully make a loaf of delicious sourdough bread and adopt a few plant babies! Yeah, I see you, Saskatoon. We’re definitely seeing this continuing the trend through 2021.

Incorporating plants into your décor honestly does wonders to help refresh the air and brighten your mood. Easy-to-care-for plants and textured pots work like magic to bring some life to a space, and edible gardens are perfect for a sunny kitchen window sill.

Maximize Natural Sunlight

Be aware of the lack of Vitamin D from being cooped up indoors—sunlight is scientifically essential to our happiness. Yes, really! And studies have shown that it can actually have a direct effect on a homebuyer’s first impression of the home, especially when staging to sell.

With the goal of calm and centred living space, gone are heavy window dressings. Instead, try a semi-opaque cotton curtain with some tassel trim for a subtle texture.

Solid Statement Walls? Forget About It

Wallpaper is not just for your grandmother anymore. It has officially made a comeback! Add some personality to your space with a statement wall, or use it to line your cabinets or shelving. Want a less permanent option in case you are renting and planning to buy a home? Peel and stick wallpaper is an exceptional way to play with your space without the commitment.

More is More

Granny Chic has a nice ring to it, right? The year 2021 has marked the rise of the “grandmillennial” trend, described as a revival of the homey design elements that you may find at your grandparent’s house. This includes velvets, floral wallpaper, brass, delicate china, antique paintings, and other vintage touches. And don’t be afraid to mix patterns, either.

This style can evoke a sense of tradition, comfort, and nostalgia. Combining old-world elements (antique paintings) and the new world comforts (modern lighting fixtures) can also create a perfect timeless mix.

No matter what your home ownership goals may be this fall, whether it’s buying a new house or selling your existing one, keep these top design trends in mind for either. From dolling up your new digs or staging for selling success, these simple changes can keep your home looking modern, chic, and effortless!

Making the Most of Your Outdoor Space

Well, Saskatoon, it looks like we’ll be spending another summer close to home. With the real estate market as hot as it is right now, it’s evident that some people are taking the opportunity to upgrade their living situations. Imagine finding a home with a great outdoor space—kids’ playset included. Or what if it has a pool? How amazing will your summer be with access to your very own backyard oasis?

If it’s possible to change your primary residence to suit your desired lifestyle better, that is a great option. If you are unable to find your family’s perfect home, what can you do to improve your outdoor space? The good news is, there’s plenty you can do to enhance the outdoor area you do have while you are waiting to move!

Furnishings: Need a place to relax and enjoy your outdoor space? Purchase hardy outdoor furnishings that stand up well to our climate.

Heat It Up: A fire pit or fire table can turn your outdoor space into an inviting gathering place. Adding a heat source to your outdoor space will also increase the amount of time you can enjoy it.

Spruce Up Your Gathering Space: If you have a deck, consider sanding and restaining it to freshen it up. If you have a patio, use a pressure washer to make your blocks look new again and take care of weeds or grass growing between the blocks.

Light It Up: Not only can lights transform the look of outdoor space, but they can also add nighttime safety and security.

Add a Water Feature: A water feature can be a great focal point, easy to install and maintain and come in many affordable options and sizes. Choose from tabletop fountains to large rock features. A successful outdoor space takes all senses into account, including sound. And there is no sound more relaxing than moving water!

Make a Walking Path: Use mulch, stones slabs, or paving stones, to lead to a bench or chair in your favorite spot.

Create Privacy: There’s nothing better about living in Saskatoon than the friendliness of familiarity you’ll feel with your neighbours. But sometimes, you just want to relax without worrying that Wilson next door will hassle you the moment you open the patio door! Adding a fence can help create privacy from neighbors and boundaries from other areas of your home. In urban climates, you may want to add a privacy wall to your deck or patio as well. Creating privacy will give your outdoor space a sense of coziness.

Add Potted Plants: Simple, yet effective, adding potted plants adds an extra touch of green into your outdoor oasis, whether you’re working with a full backyard or cozy condo balcony. Plus, if you’re thinking about selling, it can be an easy way to boost your home’s curb appeal for sale, too!

Create a Shady Place: When the sun is too hot to handle, have a place you can go to escape.  A pergola, canvas pole tent, curtains, or a taut piece of canvas will do the trick.

No matter what your outdoor space may look like, there are plenty of ways to boost its appeal while you are waiting to move. And if you find it still just doesn’t feel right, we can always, of course, speed up the timeline and start your home search sooner!

Home Staging: The Key to First Impressions When Selling Your Home

When you have a potential buyer request a viewing of your home, you have passed the first test. Your home meets some or most of their search criteria and the listing looks appealing enough for them to want to see more! One of the most important things you can do now to ensure your home makes a great first impression for buyers, both online and in person, is to stage your home.

Why Stage a Home For Sale?

Home staging has been growing in popularity for many years in the real estate industry. It’s important to understand that staging goes much further than placing furniture in a home that is going on the market for sale. The prime reasons staging has become commonplace is due to consumer demand and the increase of online home shopping.

Most, if not all, buyers first see a home online, so the listing photos matter…a lot. If your home is too cluttered and the photos are not appealing, the buyer may not even take the time to look in person. Sometimes all it takes is the wrong first impression for a potential buyer to dismiss your home entirely. If you don’t wow them at first, chances are you won’t wow them at all!

What is Home Staging?

Staging uses design and conceptualization techniques, and it might not seem like a big deal but staging your home makes a big difference when you’re trying to get the best possible price on the sale. People are more likely to purchase a home when it feels like a home to them.  You want them to be able to picture their own things in your home, not view all of your family photographs and knicknacks. Staging helps people imagine themselves living in your space.

Is Home Staging Important to Sell a Home?

Home staging is effective because it emphasizes a property’s strengths and minimizes its weak points. It allows your home to be shown at its maximum potential, presenting a well-cared for home and creating a property that gives a positive first impression. It attracts the attention and admiration of house hunting buyers, and encourages them to consider how your property fits their  requirements.  According to the Real Estate Staging Association, staged homes spend 73% less time on the market than their un-staged counterparts.

Because homes are one the most valuable assets a seller has, it just makes sense to maximize your profit for a quicker and more seamless sale. Now more than ever, buyers are looking to simplify their lives. Staging and proper preparation are crucial elements of your home’s overall marketing plan. As your trusted real estate agent, I will work with you to determine whether staging is important for your home and to what degree. If it means a smoother sale, it’s worth taking on the task!

7 Ways to Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal for Sale

Curb appeal is one of the most important selling factors for a home. It’s the very first impression potential buyers ever have, and it can even be the make-or-break factor that decides whether they even step inside the door at all. That’s why, if you’re planning on selling your home, it should be one of the first places you focus your home-staging efforts to ensure a quick and seamless sale!

Give It a Good Clean

Dirt and grime on the exterior of a home very rarely accumulate in just one day, so it’s easy not to notice the subtle build-up over time. To us, it may not necessarily feel unclean because we saw it just yesterday and it looked just the same! But to a potential buyer, that slightly “off” tinge can stick out like a sore thumb.

Take a pressure washer to the outside of the home to blast away dirt, grime, and cobwebs. And if you’ve got a paved driveway, don’t forget to give that a spray, too—you’ll be amazed at just how much of a difference a bit of water can make! Don’t forget about the windows and gutters, as well.

Give It a Fresh Coat of Paint

Whether the colour is looking out-of-place for current style trends or the weather has just taken its toll, a fresh coat of paint can always be a good ideal for boosting your home’s curb appeal for sale! To refresh the existing colour, simple scrape off a small bit of the paint and bring it to your local paint store to have it properly matched. Or, to give the house a completely new appearance, find a nice, neutral shade and complimentary colours for the trim and doors that can give it the facelift it needs! No matter which you decide to do, though, don’t forget to prep the surface to ensure long-lasting performance.

Consider Installing Vinyl Siding

While it may add a bit of work to your plate up-front to install, vinyl siding can not only boost curb appeal, but it may even help to boost your home’s value, too! Very durable and incredibly low-maintenance, potential buyers will love how much time they will save when the only upkeep they’ll need to do is a quick spray with a power washer every so often! Plus, if you’re really set on having colour, you can even buy it in a wide variety of hues that will never need a refresh of paint ever again!

Check the Roof

If you’ve had the roof repaired or replaced in the last couple of years, there’s a good chance you might not have to do much more than a quick cleaning job to clear away dirt and lost artifacts that always seem to make their way up there. However, if it has been a while, you may want to bring in a roofing professional to give the proper maintenance that it might need. Not only can this add to curb appeal, but potential home buyers will also be much happier to hear they won’t have to worry about potential costly repairs in the near future should bad weather hit.

Love on Your Landscape

Especially in summer, nothing sticks out more than an un-mown lawn with leaves, sticks, and debris flung across it. It gives the home the appearance that care hasn’t been taken in maintaining the exterior, and almost immediately the mind anticipates that the interior will be much the same.

To ensure your landscape is in tip-top shape to offer the most curb appeal possible, be sure to regularly mow your lawn when in season, and prune overgrown shrubs and trees. If you have a garden, spend some time weeding and mulching to add a polished look, and maybe pop in a few annuals for some colour. If you don’t have any garden space, you can still add some colour with a few potted plants by the door, too!

Other Small Ways to Boost Your Curb Appeal

Consider replacing house numbers. Old house numbers that are weathered and falling off not only make it harder for potential buyers to find your home, but it can take away from all the hard work you’ve done to spruce up your exterior!

Update old hardware. All potential buyers see when they notice a falling apart mailbox or a loose doorbell is more time and money they would have to spend if they were to buy your house.

Check exterior bulbs. It’s easy to forget about the bulbs we never look at once we’re in the house, but if you ever have an evening viewing, it’s hard for buyer’s to miss!

If you want your home to make the best first impression with potential buyers, a little time spent in boosting your curb appeal can make a world of difference. And it doesn’t have to be a terribly costly affair either! Even by doing just a couple of these property pampering projects, you can really amp up the WOW factor to get possible new homeowners excited to get inside and see what it’s all about!
