Colonsay sits along the east-west corridor of Highway 16 in central Saskatchewan, near the junction with Highway 2.
The town draws its name from the Inner Hebrides Scottish island of Colonsay, with all its streets also named after islands dotting the west coast of Scotland.
According to the 2021 Census of Population by Statistics Canada, Colonsay is home to a population of 446 residents, residing in 181 out of its 199 total private dwellings.
