Watrous

About this community

Watrous, a quaint town in Saskatchewan, sits 106 kilometers east of Saskatoon, boasting an economy rooted in agriculture and tourism. Renowned for its proximity to Manitou Beach, home of the Mineral Spa and Danceland dance Hall—dubbed the "Home of the World Famous Dance Floor Built on Horsehair"—Watrous offers a blend of natural charm and recreational allure.

Named after Frank Watrous Morse, the town hosts a range of amenities, including several restaurants, a hospital, medical clinic, elementary and high schools, community college, bowling alley, RCMP detachment, banks, grocery store, and motels.

Watrous holds significance as the location of the transmitter for CBK, CBC Radio One's primary station in Saskatchewan. Originally situated in Watrous in 1939 to ensure robust nighttime signal coverage across the Prairie Provinces, the transmitter aimed to serve Regina and Saskatoon, among other populated areas, from a single source. Although Watrous serves as the station's city of license, its studios are based in Regina, with the Watrous transmitter still considered its primary signal.

Adding to its cultural allure, Watrous is home to the All Saints Anglican Church on Main Street, housing a stained glass window possibly dating back over 500 years. Speculated to originate from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Latton, Wiltshire, England, this historic artifact enriches the town's architectural landscape.

As of 2021, Watrous accommodates a population of 1,842 residents, residing in 851 of its 908 total private dwellings.
