Cudworth

About this community

Cudworth is nestled approximately 85 kilometers northeast of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, amid the scenic Minnichinas Hills. Enveloped in hilly, partially forested terrain east of the South Saskatchewan River, the area is characterized by the unique aspen parkland biome.

The roots of Cudworth trace back to the late 19th century when pioneering settlers established themselves west of the present-day town. In 1903, German settlers arrived and made their home in nearby Leofeld, Saskatchewan. By 1911, the village of Cudworth was officially founded, bearing the name of English philosopher Ralph Cudworth. Today, the town remains predominantly inhabited by families of Ukrainian and German descent.

Just two miles west of Cudworth stands the historic Our Lady of Sorrows Shrine, featuring an altar, chapel, statue, and Stations of the Cross atop a hill overlooking Highway 2. The shrine's origins stem from a compelling legend wherein three children encountered a sorrowful apparition carrying a golden cross and dragging chains, disappearing upon their approach. This site hosts an annual pilgrimage on the tenth Sunday after Easter, recognized as an official pilgrimage of the Saskatoon Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy.

With a population of 772 residents residing in 331 of its 364 total private dwellings, Cudworth embodies a rich blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty.
